Adult occupational therapy Newcastle — what it is and who it's for

When most people think of occupational therapy, they think of children — or perhaps rehabilitation after an injury. But adult occupational therapy, particularly for neurodivergent adults, is something quite different.

Being and Becoming OT provides neuroaffirming occupational therapy for adults across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stephens — supporting people navigating late diagnosis, neurodivergent burnout, daily living challenges, and the ongoing work of building a life that actually fits.

What is adult OT — really?

Occupational therapy focuses on the activities that make up everyday life — the things you need to do, want to do, and are expected to do. For adults, this includes work, routines, relationships, rest, community participation, and everything in between.

Adult OT at Being and Becoming isn't about fixing you. It's about understanding how your brain and nervous system work, identifying what's getting in the way, and building support that fits your actual life — not an idealised version of it.

Who adult OT can help

We commonly work alongside adults who are:

•       recently diagnosed with autism or ADHD, and making sense of what that means

•       experiencing neurodivergent burnout — the deep, persistent exhaustion that doesn't resolve with rest alone

•       struggling with executive function — planning, organisation, time management, getting started on tasks

•       navigating daily living challenges that feel harder than they should

•       wanting to understand their own sensory profile and build environments and routines that support regulation

•       working through identity, values and what a sustainable, authentic life looks like

•       accessing NDIS funding and wanting support that's genuinely goals-focused

What sets neuroaffirming adult OT apart

At Being and Becoming OT, we don't approach adult support through a deficit lens. We don't try to make neurodivergent adults appear or function more neurotypically.

Instead, we start with curiosity. We take time to understand your strengths, your sensory needs, your energy patterns, your history, and what matters most to you. Support is shaped around your life and your goals — not a standard program.

Sessions are conversational, reflective and practical. There's no fixed structure. Some sessions might focus on understanding patterns you've noticed. Others might be about building practical strategies, exploring identity, or simply having a space to think out loud without judgment.

Funding and access

Adult OT at Being and Becoming OT is available through NDIS self-managed and plan-managed funding, Medicare Enhanced Primary Health Care Plans (referred through your GP), private health insurance, and private pay.

No referral is needed to make an enquiry. A formal diagnosis is not required to begin a conversation — many adults reach out while still exploring or questioning their experiences.

Where sessions take place

Sessions can take place online via telehealth, in the community across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stephens, or at the BCP Hub in Warners Bay for in-clinic appointments.
