NDIS occupational therapy Newcastle — what it covers and how to access it

If you or your child has an NDIS plan and you're looking for occupational therapy in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie or the Hunter region, this article explains what you need to know — including what OT looks like under NDIS, who can access it, and how to get started.

What types of NDIS plans can access OT?

Being and Becoming OT accepts NDIS self-managed and plan-managed clients. We are not registered with the NDIA, which means we cannot accept agency-managed plans.

If you're unsure which type of plan you have, this is usually stated in your NDIS plan document. Your support coordinator can also help clarify. If you're still unsure, you're welcome to get in touch and we'll help you work it out.

What does NDIS OT actually cover?

Occupational therapy sits primarily under the Capacity Building — Daily Activities support category in an NDIS plan. Depending on your plan and goals, OT can fund support for:

•       daily living skills — routines, self-care, managing tasks at home

•       sensory processing support — understanding and responding to sensory needs

•       emotional regulation — building skills and strategies for nervous system management

•       executive function — planning, organisation, time management

•       social participation and community engagement

•       school and education support, including educator consultation

•       independence and life skills for young people and adults

•       identity, self-understanding and wellbeing for neurodivergent adults

Do I need a referral?

No. You do not need a referral from a GP or specialist to access OT through your NDIS plan. You can contact Being and Becoming OT directly. If you're accessing support through NDIS, you may need to provide a copy of your current NDIS plan before commencing services — but you don't need anything in place to make an initial enquiry.

What does NDIS OT look like at Being and Becoming?

Our approach is neuroaffirming and strengths-based. We don't follow a fixed program — support is shaped around your NDIS goals and what matters most in your everyday life.

Sessions can take place at home, school, in the community, at the BCP Hub in Warners Bay, or via telehealth. We work across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stephens.

Getting started

The best place to start is a free 20-minute discovery call. There's no paperwork required upfront, and no commitment. We'll talk through your situation, your NDIS plan and goals, and whether Being and Becoming OT feels like the right fit.
