Regulation: what it actually is and why it matters

Regulation gets talked about everywhere now — and the more we learn, the more we realise how layered and deeply human it really is.

At its core, regulation is the process by which our nervous system notices stressors and brings us back toward balance. It's our ability to manage our energy, attention, emotions, thoughts and behaviour so we can meet the demands of the moment.

But here's the thing: regulation is not about being calm or happy all the time. It's about having flexibility across nervous system states. Every state has a purpose. The goal is access — not suppression.

Our nervous system is always moving

Our nervous system shifts up and down depending on what we need. Sometimes we need to down-regulate into rest and connection. Other times we need to up-regulate into energy and focus. Regulation is the ability to move flexibly across these states — and to return to balance when something knocks us off centre.

Think about anger, for example. Many of us have learned to see anger as something to eliminate. But anger can be deeply useful — it can fuel boundary-setting, protect us from harm, and signal that something important is being violated. It becomes a problem only when it overwhelms us, gets stuck "on," or shows up in situations that don't match the level of threat.

Many neurodivergent people have learned to suppress anger and protective states through years of masking or having their responses invalidated. Rebuilding access to these states — safely and gradually — can be deeply healing.

Regulation grows through relationships

Here is perhaps the most important thing to understand about regulation: strategies alone don't build it. Regulation grows through safe, attuned relationships.

We learn to regulate through co-regulation — through repeated experiences of moving from dysregulation back into safety with someone who stays calm and present alongside us. Over time, co-regulation builds self-regulation, with interoception — the ability to notice internal body cues — acting as the bridge.

This is why it matters so much that we don't simply hand children a strategy sheet and expect them to use it. Strategies only take root when learned and practised in the context of connection.

The window of tolerance

The window of tolerance is the zone in which our nervous system can function flexibly — we can think, feel, connect and respond. When we move outside this window — either into high activation (fight/flight) or low activation (freeze/shutdown) — our access to flexibility disappears.

The good news is that the window can widen over time. This happens through proactive regulation activities, supportive relationships, sleep, physical health, and learning to notice early signs before dysregulation escalates.

What we often get backwards: we expect children and young people to self-regulate before their nervous systems are developmentally ready. And we expect neurodivergent people to override nervous system responses that are not within their voluntary control.

What regulation support actually looks like

As occupational therapists, we approach regulation through a nervous system lens. This means:

•       modelling our own regulation so the process becomes visible and learnable

•       adapting environments to create conditions where regulation becomes possible in the first place

•       balancing demand reduction with skill-building — because more pressure doesn't build resilience, it increases overwhelm

•       helping people build interoceptive awareness — noticing body cues like tension, heart rate, temperature — before dysregulation peaks

•       working on proactive regulation, not just crisis response

Simple regulation activities don't need to be complex. Swings, beanbags, sparkling water, music, silence, trampolines, rocking, or walking can offer regulation without cognitive load — which is exactly what a dysregulated nervous system needs.

Regulation is not a fixed trait. It is a dynamic, relational, physiological process that shifts throughout the day — and with the right support, it can grow.
